The beginning of the year presents a great opportunity to embark on a deep-cleaning journey for your home. Although you can do it at any time of the year, the first few weeks are typically quieter on the social front as folks recover from the Christmas and New Year rush, and for those who celebrate the Lunar New Year, it is the calm before the storm of even more festivities and social visits.
Why deep clean your bathroom?
Among the spaces in your home, your bathroom might be the space where you would devote more attention when deep cleaning. For starters, your bathroom is constantly exposed to moisture, which makes it vulnerable to bacteria and mould growth especially in the spots you cannot see. Besides that, when you use the bathroom to clean the day’s (or night’s) dirt off you, all that dirt has to go somewhere – and “somewhere” can sometimes mean the grouts and crevices where water gather, such as the gap between your water closet’s tank and seat (unless you have a one-piece water closet like Nevada).
So get your cleaning supplies ready, because we’re going to give your bathroom a good deep clean with this guide:
1. Start by clearing up what doesn’t belong
A surprising amount of stuff just accumulates when you’re not paying attention. To start off, you’d want to clear out all the stuff that doesn’t belong in your bathroom, whatever they may be. Then with the help of some storage containers, you can also put your toiletries aside neatly, so they don’t get in the way when you get down to business.
2. Pre-treat your surfaces from the top-down
Before the hard work begins, you can make the process go a lot easier by pre-treating the surfaces to be cleaned. This is where you start dusting off your light fixtures and wall décor, and also apply the cleaners that require some time to set in, like a toilet bowl cleaner.
A good rule of thumb when cleaning everything is to start from the top and work your way down. As you clean, dust, dirt, and other stuff will come dislodged and scatter across lower surfaces, aided by the pull of gravity.
In your bathroom, if you have any ceiling-mounted ventilation fans or light fixtures, those would be good places to start – then followed by any cabinets you have, as well as your shower components, water closets, and finally the floor.
3. Wipe and scrub until everything is clean
Now that everything has been pre-treated, you can begin cleaning in earnest. Taking a top-down approach again, arm yourself with a good microfibre cloth and brush, and apply some elbow grease to clean all your pre-treated surfaces.
While a bit of soap and water is sufficient for most parts of your bathroom, there are some areas that require special care. Any glass surfaces, such as your shower screen or mirrors, can benefit from a spritz of glass cleaning solutions (or plain old vinegar, if your nostrils can take the scent).
When cleaning your water closet, be sure to also clean under the lid, seat, and hinges – if your cleaning brush is too big to really get in the nooks and crannies, a retired toothbrush does just the trick. For your basin and bathtub, be sure also to clean the underside of the faucets and any edges to clear out any accumulation of dirt there. Finally, just before you wrap up with the floor cleaning, make sure you also clear the drains to finish the job.

How long does it take to deep clean a bathroom?
All in all, depending on the size of your bathroom, you could be looking at spending an hour or two in total to clean everything (unless you have a truly gargantuan bathroom). While it may be more time-consuming than other spaces to clean, we guarantee you’d feel the difference immediately once the cleaning is done!
